Formula 1’s teams are set to conduct more pre-season tests next year, according to McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh, who has also said that a final test outing in Bahrain is likely before the championship season begins.
This year saw all pre-season running restricted to February and all tests being staged in Spain as the venues of Valencia, Jerez and Barcelona hosted the sessions. For next year, though, this amount is set to rise although in-season testing will remain limited, with only a strict number of straight-line aerodynamic runs on offer.
“We've agreed that there will be six tests during the winter and probably the last one will be in Bahrain, but it hasn't been quite agreed yet,” Whitmarsh, Chairman of FOTA (Formula One Teams Association), explained to the press in Belgium at the weekend, with much of this year’s testing in Europe having been hampered by poor weather.
“Personally, I would like to see more testing but I am respectful of the fact that there are teams still hurting from it,” he continued, stressing that keeping testing cost-effective for the sport’s smaller outfits is paramount.
“We've now got at least six tests in the winter, so that's a further step forward. What we haven't got at the moment is an agreement to test during the season, and I'd like to see a couple of tests, but we've made some progress - to have six tests in the winter is more than we've had in recent years.”
