Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber is running a fundraising campaign in order to ease the recovery of New Zealander’s Chris Van der Drift, who was injured in a heavy accident in a Superleague Formula event at Brands Hatch a month ago.
With Webber having broken his leg in a Tasmanian cycling accident in November 2008, the Australian has since been credited for a rapid recovery before going on to take his maiden two Grand Prix wins last year.
24-year-old Van der Drift, New Zealander by nationality but of Dutch descent, picked up multiple fractures when his Olympiacos Superleague car was laughed into the air at approximately 157 miles per hour on the approach to Brands’ Pilgrim’s Drop – the same location as Johnny Herbert’s horrific F3000 crash in 1988 – before bursting into flames.
“It's really humbling to see so many good friends from within the industry supporting me through this difficult period,” Van der Drift, who now requires specialist treatment, has commented via a statement.
