Felipe Massa believes Ferrari faces a highly difficult weekend at the Italian Grand Prix on the back off a below-par performance from the prancing horse in Belgium on Sunday. The Maranello squad now heads into its home race 80 points off the Constructors’ Championship lead.
With Fernando Alonso having headed both of Friday’s practice sessions in Belgium, the red cars fell back in qualifying and the race as McLaren, Red Bull and Renault unleashed their full capabilities.
“In terms of the result, the championship and the points total for Ferrari, it was not enough.” Massa writes plainly on the Ferrari website.
“On Friday we had looked very strong while we were less so on Saturday and Sunday, so maybe our competitors did not show their full potential on the first day - this meant the whole weekend was more difficult than we expected.”
With this in mind, the Paulista will now be approaching next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix with caution.
“That will be a great event, racing in front of our Tifosi, but the reality is that it will be a very important race because, after the less that satisfactory performance in Belgium, the championship is not looking so easy for us,” he admitted.
“We need to keep pushing for the last six races, trying to be back in the fight for wins or at least as many podiums as possible. For sure, it won’t be easy.”
