Petronas extends Malaysia race sponsorship

2 September 2010

It has been confirmed by sporting commercial rights holder Formula One Management (FOM) that oil and gas company Petronas has renewed its sponsorship of the Malaysian Grand Prix, which it has held since the race made its debut on the calendar in 1999.

The new deal stretches out the partnership for another five years, with Petronas having also joined Mercedes GP as team title sponsor for 2010 after making the switch from BMW Sauber.

Up to and including 2015, the Malaysian-owned company will therefore see its name and logo remain in the chief advertising locations around the Sepang circuit as well as on the podium.

It has also been revealed that the official name of the race will now be relabelled as ‘FORMULA 1 PETRONAS MALAYSIA GRAND PRIX’.

“I am pleased that Petronas has again used Formula 1 to let the world follow their success in the oil and gas automotive industry,” comments Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of the Formula One Group. “We have a really close relationship with Petronas, who help Malaysia promote the country worldwide.”
