Race day for next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix will mark the one-year anniversary of Lotus Racing in its current guise, with Chief Technical Officer Mike Gascoyne having originally been its only member when first setting up the outfit.
With Heikki Kovalainen having made Q2 qualifying for the second time in Belgium, it will be team-mate Jarno Trulli who has the largest following at Monza - the venue of the Pescara man’s home Grand Prix.
So far, since bringing the legendary team name back into Formula 1 for the first time since 1994, Lotus has enjoyed a highest grid position of 13th at Spa, which matches the best race finish classification of Kovalainen in Malaysia.
“Monza will also be very special for me, Tony, Din, Nasa, Riad and the whole team on a personal level,” Gascoyne said on Thursday. “Race day is the 12 September, which is exactly one year to the day since we heard that our entry into the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship had been accepted.
“It’s hard to put into words just what that means to all of us but it’s already been an incredible 365 days and we have many more exciting times to come.
“I’ve been asked a number of times if I really thought we’d be able to do what looked to many like an impossible task – creating a team from literally just words on a piece of paper to now sitting tenth in the championship, best of the new teams and with a very bright future ahead of us.”
Monza will also mark the return to the paddock of Team Principal Tony Fernandes, who has been unable to attend recent races due to other business commitments.
