With McLaren having said that they were to remove their f-duct for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix before later reconsidering the decision, Renault too admits that a quicker lap time in Italy this weekend may be possible without the tool.
With the Enstone squad having introduced its rear wing-stalling device with superb results last time out in Belgium, Technical Director James Allison has now said that – due to Monza requiring such low-downforce setups in normal circumstances – f-duct gains, if any, will be far smaller than those of Spa.
“Yes, Monza is very different from all of the other circuits and so we have had to prepare a bespoke package that we will not use anywhere else,” he began, pointing out that the f-duct saved the team half a second per lap at Spa.
“To add further complication, the f-duct is a potential alternative option for Monza. Like several other teams, we too are evaluating whether we can make the device work in the particular, low-downforce environment of Monza.”
James also noted that the success of the McLaren-pioneered f-duct in Belgium was reward for much hard work at Renault.
“From as early as the Bahrain Grand Prix we had a small group of aerodynamicists establishing what we would need to do to put the concept on our car,” he explained. “Once we had a concept that we felt had a good chance of working properly straight out of the box, we committed to manufacture. It was therefore extremely pleasing to see that the device worked correctly from the first free practice runs in Spa.”
