Kobayashi stays with Sauber for 2011

7 September 2010

It has been announced by Sauber Motorsport that Japan’s Kamui Kobayashi will remain with the Swiss team next season. The former Toyota driver joined the Hinwil squad for the start of the current campaign and has so far notched up a respectable points haul of 21.

After raising several eyebrows courtesy of his performances for Toyota whilst subbing for the injured Timo Glock in the final two Grands Prix of last year, Kobayashi was signed up by Sauber prior to the 2010 season and has since picked up points finishes in Istanbul, Valencia, Silverstone, Budapest and Spa.

Having reached the top ten shootout in qualifying three times and with a highest race finishing position of sixth so far this term, his points total also leaves him ahead of more experienced team-mate Pedro de la Rosa by 15.

“We had a very difficult start to the season but we’ve worked together to pull ourselves out of that situation,” said Kobayashi, who will turn 24 next Monday.

“I feel very much at home in Peter Sauber’s team and am very pleased we’ll be working together again in 2011. However, for now I’m focusing 100 percent on this year; there are still six Grand Prix weekends to go in 2010 and we’ll be hoping to make up more ground.”

“We enjoy having our rookie as part of the team – both as a driver and a person,” added Team Principal Peter Sauber. “We never had any doubts about working with him again in 2011 - Kamui has definitely fulfilled our expectations in terms of his speed and fighting spirit.”
