Fernando Alonso has revealed that the Scuderia should be more competitive this weekend at the Italian Grand Prix and that the Maranello-based outfit has sorted the problems that left them off the pace and struggling two weeks ago at Spa-Francorchamps.
Alonso failed to score at the Belgian Grand Prix, the thirteenth round in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship, spinning off near the end while on course to finish eighth and pick up four championship points.
That meant he lost ground to eventual winner, Lewis Hamilton and runner-up, Mark Webber and he now trails the former, who is top in the race for the 2010 F1 drivers’ title, by 41 points.
“As I said last week, in Spa the performance of the F10 did not live up to our expectations,” Alonso wrote in his diary on the official Ferrari website. “The engineers have now carefully analysed the data from the race though and from the aero test that [test driver] Giancarlo Fisichella carried out down the straight at Vairano.
“It produced indications which led us to understand what did not work as it should have done and we have put those elements right for the next event. I am therefore confident about our chances of getting back to fighting for a place on the podium, just as we had done prior to the summer break.”
As for how important this race is in terms of the championship, Alonso added that while it is not yet ‘make or break’, it isn’t far off.
“There is no point denying the fact this is a tricky moment of the season for us,” he continued. “In Monza, if we do not pick up a significant number of points and our competitors get the maximum and pull away in the lead, then the situation in the classification would become very difficult.
“I’m not saying it would be impossible to reach our target, because that kind of talk does not exist in Formula 1, but we are aware of the situation and we are ready to react to any eventuality,” he concluded.
