Jordan: Ferrari should get a bigger penalty

8 September 2010

Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan has urged the World Motor Sport Council to come down hard on Ferrari today when it examines the Scuderia’s use of illegal team orders at the German Grand Prix, the eleventh round in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Ferrari is in the dock after Felipe Massa yielded his position at Hockenheim back in July so that team-mate Fernando Alonso could pass him and come through to win. Any team instructions, which directly alter the outcome of a race, have been banned since the start of the 2003 season.

Post-Hockenheim, Ferrari were handed a fine of 100,000 dollars – a punishment they chose not to appeal – and a greater sentence could be issued in the French capital today.

However, while some such as 1996 F1 world champion, Damon Hill have said a big punishment would not suit this particular crime (see separate story – Ferrari does not deserve a large penalty, says Hill), Jordan has taken the opposite stance.

"It was very blatant," Jordan told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I think they should get a bigger penalty. What happens if Alonso gets away scot-free and goes on to win the championship by two points?

"It will always be seen to be a sham, where breaking the rules pays off, and that is something that can never be acceptable. What Ferrari did was they showed no respect to the public, they treated us all like muppets, they broke the rules and they have to pay the penalty."
