The World Motor Sport Council has confirmed today that there will be no 13th team in 2011 and 2012, as ‘none of the candidates met the requirements' to be granted an entry into the FIA Formula One World Championship.
“Following the press release of 19 March 2010 calling for expressions of interest to participate in the 2011 and 2012 seasons of the FIA Formula One World Championship, a number of interested parties expressed their interest," read a statement from the FIA.
“[However] it was considered that none of the candidates met the requirements to be granted an entry into the Championship. Consequently, the allocation of the 13th team will not be granted.”
The announcement is bad news for 1997 F1 world champion, Jacques Villeneuve, who had hoped to return to the sport with his own team, run in conjunction with ex-GP2 outfit, Durango.
Epsilon Euskadi were also rejected, while ART Grand Prix, who have enjoyed much success in GP2 and F3, and the Cypher Group both withdrew their applications back in July.
