Fernando Alonso has admitted that a string of six strong results are now much sought after if he is to stand any chance of picking up a third world title this season. Heading into the weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the Ferrari driver lies fifth in the drivers' standings and 41 points in arrears of current leader Lewis Hamilton.
Former double title winner Alonso has picked up just two wins from his first 13 Grands Prix as a Ferrari driver, despite many having tipped the Oviedo man for the championship prior to the opening race in Bahrain which he won.
To put his current situation into perspective, the 29-year-old would be crowned Champion by only a single point in Abu Dhabi should he win all remaining races with the Englishman placing second.
“Obviously, with the less races you have left the more problems you're left with if you have a bad weekend,” the 2005 and 2006 Champion said in Italy on Thursday.
“This weekend might not be the last good weekend to score good points but it will be either here or Singapore where we must begin to recover some good points.”
Fernando went on to add that finishing at least on the podium at all remaining events should be a realistic target, if not a necessary one. “Another failure to finish will probably mean 'bye bye' to the championship,” he summed up.
