World Champion Jenson Button has said that McLaren will wait until the conclusion of today's first three hours of practice at Monza before electing whether to run with its f-duct on-board this weekend. The Woking squad had said that it would not be using the tool in Italy although it has now decided to collect data at the venue before making a final call.
With the f-duct allowing teams to enjoy greater top speeds on straight but Monza's track layout meaning low-downforce car setups could negate any advantage the f-duct brings, McLaren will discover on Friday whether or not it is worth using the rear wing-stalling part.
“We're still not sure,” Frome's Button said in Thursday afternoon's press conference. “We've done a lot of testing in the simulator with it plus lots of setup work but we still don't know, so we'll have to wait and see.”
Nevertheless, Jenson remains confident that a second consecutive McLaren victory is possible this weekend.
“At the moment I feel that we're in a strong position and that the car is working very well,” he continued. “We had a couple of tough races when we weren't as competitive as the top teams at the time but, if you look at Spa, there was nothing quicker than our car."
