'I struggle to see grid lines' – Massa on Spa incident

Felipe Massa has admitted that he was fortunate not to be penalised at the Belgian Grand Prix, having overshot his grid box by approximately two metres just seconds before the race began. Unusually, the Ferrari driver received no punishment as Formula 1 governing body the FIA was unaware of the slip-up.


Despite fans in the grandstand and television commentators having pointed out Massa's error in Belgium, race stewards were never made aware of the moment during the race and – although the result will stand, with the Brazilian having finished fourth – the FIA is now investigating as to why neither electronic grid sensors nor track marshals informed them of the mistake.

“Usually I'm the lowest guy in the car,” Massa explained to reports in the Italian Grand Prix paddock. “I didn't see the line very well and I was lucky (not to be penalised)."
