Magny-Cours hoping for 2012 F1 return

10 September 2010

2010 marks the second consecutive season in which there has been no French Grand Prix although officials at the Magny-Cours circuit are confident that Formula 1 can return by as early as 2012, with a series of improvements including a new motorway in the pipeline.

The last French Grand Prix was held in 2008, with Felipe Massa leading home a 1-2 for Ferrari as team-mate Kimi Räikkönen lost out on the victory due to a damaged exhaust. Magny-Cours now hopes to see F1 return, with an improved infrastructure planned, following the critisisms of sporting commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone.

“We stopped in 2008 because neither the General Council of Nevers nor the Regional Council of Burgundy could come to a decision,” Magny-Cours Chief Executive Serge Saulnier explained to newspaper L'Équipe.

“Last time they each put up to 3 million euros (2.47 million pounds).”

Saulnier went on to give details on the improvements which have been pencilled in. “The A77 motorway between Paris and Magny-Cours will be opened in the coming weeks and we will also open new coveraged grandstands at the Adelaide Hairpin, with the roofs being equipped with solar panels,” he continued.

“Like every year, we have received from our approval for Formula 1 from the FIA. We have also had an enlargement of the pit lane. We should have our financial package sorted by June 2011.”
