Gearbox reason for Barrichello stoppage

10 September 2010

It has been confirmed by Williams that a gearbox issue was the reason Rubens Barrichello's car stopped in Monza's first practice session on Friday morning, leaving the Brazilian 21st quickest and with only four laps to his name.

Paulista Barrichello – who has won three times in Italy – climbed up the timesheets to a promising seventh in the afternoon period although the morning saw him sidelined at Lesmo 2.

“We had one issue in the morning with a gearbox input shaft failure on Rubens’ car that cost him P1, but he recovered well in P2 to get through the items he wanted to test,” Technical Director Sam Michael explained.

“On Nico (Hülkenberg)'s car, we ran a solid programme all day; now we're looking at setup for tomorrow afternoon and we expect it will be a tight session.”

“Obviously we had a little problem this morning and lost a bit of track time, but we caught up well this afternoon,” Barrichello added. “In summary, we look good. That said, we will have to work hard to maintain our relative position, so I am pleased but taking nothing for granted."
