After being crowned GP2 Champion in Italy on Sunday, Pastor Maldonado has moved into an exclusive club which also contains the names Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, Timo Glock, Giorgio Pantano and Nico Hülkenberg. The Venezuelan is now positive about a Formula 1 debut next year.
In his fourth GP2 season, Maldonado required only a single point heading into Monza's Sprint Race and – even though he may have ended his afternoon in the Parabolica tyre barriers – the result was enough for the title as Mexican rival Sergio Pérez failed to win the race. Pastor now looks forward to engaging in more F1-based discussions.
“For sure it will make it better for Formula 1,” he said of winning the GP2 title. “It's going to be interesting for the next month because we are pushing very hard, even my country, and it helps a lot to make a good chance for Formula 1.
"I think I can do very well there and we are concentrating on getting a good team to do my best and the title is important - to go there with the title, it says a lot.”
In fact, the 25-year-old admits that talks have long since been underway.
“We have been working in that way for the last two or three months and were concentrating on the championship here,” the Rapax driver continued. “We haven't got anything yet but we have talked to a lot of teams and have a lot of interest. Now I will look more at getting the best seat I can find for me for the future.”
