'I was very worried about the mechanic' – Yamamoto

14 September 2010

Sakon Yamamoto has explained that he was fully aware of the incident which involved his car hitting a mechanic in the Monza pit lane on Sunday. With the lollipop man having released the Japanese driver, a man still standing in front of the car's right-rear wheel was knocked down.

Since the race, the Spanish team has been fined 20,000 dollars (13,000 pounds) for the unsafe release which resulted in the brief closure of the pit lane as an ambulance attended the scene.

“The first thing I would say was that I was very worried about the incident in the pit lane,” Yamamoto commented, with the mechanic having been taken to a nearby hospital after first visiting the circuit medical centre but remaining conscious throughout.

“I asked if he was okay and was told that he was not badly injured. Apart from that, we had good pace in the first stint to keep up with the other competitors. I kept concentrating during the race, tried to do the best for the team and we were able to finish another race, so that's good.”
