De la Rosa still targeting 2011 race seat

14 September 2010

Pedro de la Rosa has admitted that he did not expect Sauber to replace him before the end of the season, which has delivered a tough and ultimately shortened Formula 1 comeback for the unfortunate Spaniard. However, he does hope to be back on the grid at the start of 2011.

Having last raced in F1 full-time for Jaguar in 2002, Barcelona's de la Rosa returned this season following a total of seven campaigns of testing for McLaren. From Singapore onwards, though, Germany's Nick Heidfeld will partner Kamui Kobayashi.

However, although the 39-year-old was generally not expected to remain with the Hinwil squad next year, he has expressed his shock over the early exit.

“I am surprised by the team´s decision but I respect it and would like to wish everyone good luck for the remainder of the season,” he said. “I still intend to be in Formula 1 for 2011.”

“It was a hard decision for me to make as a Team Principal and I want to thank Pedro for his professionalism,” team head Peter Sauber commented.
