Valencia in Spain was the venue on Tuesday and Wednesday as Pedro de la Rosa took part in his first testing programme for 2011 tyre supplier Pirelli, replacing Nick Heidfeld as the Italian company’s driver following the his switch to Sauber.
The first Pirelli testing for its Intermediate and Wet compounds involved the Ricardo Tormo circuit being sprayed with water supplied by a truck for both days, as the area’s recent weather provided only a bone dry surface.
As explained by the Pirelli, though, the task of testing was in fact made easier when no rain was falling as this allowed the track to dry more consistently, enabling more accurate data to be collected.
“It's a real pleasure for me to be working with Pirelli this year and I'm delighted to have finally had the chance to try out these tyres,” Barcelona’s de la Rosa commented after driving the 2009 Toyota chassis.
“We completed all the work we wanted to do during this initial session and now we have a clearer idea about future avenues for development.”
The Valencia gathering also included a continuation of Pirelli’s GP2 programme, which saw 2008 Champion Giorgio Pantano driving the series’ new-look 2011 car once again.
Pirelli testing will continue at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya towards the end of the month.
