Mercedes man Nico Rosberg fears the newly laid asphalt at the Korea International Circuit might not ‘hold up’ next weekend when the 5.621 kilometre track hosts its first ever round of the FIA Formula One World Championship.
The circuit only got the official green light on Tuesday this week - following a two-day track inspection by FIA Formula 1 Race Director and Safety Delegate Charlie Whiting, and while Rosberg is enthusiastic about the event, it seems he has his reservations too.
"It will be an exciting challenge to race at the new Korean circuit. It looks great from the pictures that we have seen and I hope that the asphalt holds up as it has only been put down very recently," he said.
“It is always interesting to learn a new circuit and generally I get up to speed quickly so I'm looking forward to it."
Fellow countryman Nick Heidfeld meanwhile has similar concerns: “At the moment hardly anyone knows exactly what to expect on site. I am very curious to see the track and the facilities! From a driver’s perspective the most important thing is that the tarmac lasts. If the final layer is laid a short time before, it is generally understood it can be oily which, of course, would be extremely problematic,” added the Sauber driver.
“But I can only give any informed information about the quality and lay-out of the track once I have driven there. Generally I welcome new venues because they provide a special driving challenge, and for a World Championship it is positive to race in as many countries as possible.”
