Pedro de la Rosa has admitted that he was somewhat bewildered with the performance of Pirelli’s 2011 Formula 1 tyres this week as he continued testing with the Italian company at his home circuit, racking up a total of 262 laps in Barcelona.
Circulating in 35-lap stints in order to verify the consistency of the Hard and Medium compound Slicks, which this latest test focused on, the former Sauber driver managed a total of 1,218 kilometres (757 miles) over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday, with ambient temperatures rising from around 7°C (45°F) in the mornings to more pleasant figures of approximately 21°C (70°F) in the afternoon.
“It’s been an excellent couple of days,” de la Rosa said after driving the 2009 Toyota chassis once again.
“I’ve been very impressed because I have to say that the tyres were at an even higher level than I imagined. If you look at what Pirelli has done, it’s hard to believe that all this work has been carried out in such a short space of time.
“These Pirelli tyres have their own quite different characteristics to the current supplier that the drivers will appreciate next year and I’m confident that they will form a very competitive package. Pirelli’s arrival is great news for Formula 1.”
