Felipe Massa has hailed his and Ferrari’s first test on Pirelli’s 2011 Formula 1 tyres a success, having topped the timesheets in Abu Dhabi on Friday after struggling to build up temperature in the Bridgestone products for most of the latest season.
“It was a positive start to begin to understand the behaviour of the Pirelli tyres,” said the pace-setting Brazilian, whose best lap time was two seconds slower than the leading pace in Young Driver testing on Wednesday, with each team having been allocated two sets of Medium and two sets of Soft compound tyres today.
“I felt at ease right from the start and there were no unpleasant surprises.
"We tried two different types and acquired a lot of data which will be useful for the Italian company to develop the tyres still further for the start of the 2011 season.
On the hards (Medium compound), there were some difficulties over a long run while the softs (Soft compound) worked well both on the very first lap and also after they had done a larger number of laps.”
