Lotus Racing drops Fauzy

13 December 2010

It has been confirmed that Fairuz Fauzy has been released by the 1Malaysia Lotus Racing - set to be named 'Team Lotus' in 2011 - after being involved with the Norfolk outfit as test and reserve driver this season.

Malaysian Fauzy made his debut in a Formula 1 car during practice for his home event at Sepang in April, replacing Heikki Kovalainen for Friday’s first free session before appearing again on four more occasions before the end of the year.

However, despite being expected to remain with the Tony Fernandes-run squad for five seasons, Kuala Lumpur’s Fauzy has now been released from his contract prematurely.

‘Just last week, Lotus Racing prematurely released Fairuz from what was supposed to be a five-year contract, a move some may see as a detriment to the team after the insight, experience and exposure Fairuz has gained over the last 12 months with Lotus Racing,’ reads a statement from the management of the 28-year-old.

‘Fairuz has decided to contemplate other options and offers he has been receiving as of late from other Formula 1 teams, which also affords him the opportunity and flexibility to compete in other racing series at the same time.’
