Marussia Virgin Racing Team Principal John Booth has talked up his squad’s chances for the upcoming Formula 1 season, with the all new MVR-02 being launched at the BBC television centre in London on Monday. After a challenging debut campaign in 2010, Booth is confident that the outfit’s challenger for the upcoming season will be a significant improvement over its VR-01 predecessor.
“The MVR-02 is a clear step forward in every area and a credit to all the hard work that has gone into our car development programme over the past 12 months,” Booth said after the team’s new car was revealed. “Generally, we have every reason to believe that 2011 will be a very exciting and positive experience for our team.”
Despite sharing Booth’s words of optimism, Technical Director Nick Wirth stated that the true pace of Virgin’s new contender will only be revealed at the first Grand Prix in Bahrain. The 44-year-old will be hoping for a much more problem-free build-up to this year’s championship, after the team’s winter testing efforts were hampered by technical issues in 2010.
“As ever, the competitive level of this first iteration of the MVR-02 will only be revealed in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix next month,” he commented at the official launch. “In the meantime we look forward to what we hope will be a positive track debut for the MVR-02 in Jerez this week.”
Virgin will be present at the next pre-season test with its new chassis, after running at the first group gathering in Valencia with its 2010 car. Despite not being able to use its new package, the team opted to learn as much as possible about the new Pirelli tyres, as well as trial some components for the MVR-02
