Having attended last week’s first pre-season test in Valencia as an official guest of Team Lotus, Tony Fernandes has now revealed that the Indian will test for the Hingham-based squad as Formula 1 moves to Jerez this week.
Having made his F1 debut with Hispania in 2010, Chandhok has been left on the sidelines this year although a third driver role within Team Lotus is now highly possible, with test outings coming up in both Jerez and Barcelona.
“We would like him to be reserve driver but we've got to see whether it all works out, that's the plan,” Fernandes explained to Reuters. “He is going to get a couple of slots in the testing now in Jerez and Barcelona and then we'll decide after that.”
The Malaysian entrepreneur added that leading team members are keen to see the Chennai man join the squad: “Mike (Gascoyne, Chief Technical Officer) and Riad (Asmat, CEO) and everyone else feel he's the right guy to add value to the team.”
