Talent should be stronger than money, says Hülkenberg

9 February 2011

Nico Hülkenberg is looking to ‘avoid such situations’ as the one which left him without his Williams drive at the end of the 2010 season, with GP2 Champion successor Pastor Maldonado joining to partner Rubens Barrichello. Now Force India’s reserve, the German continues to target a 2012 return to racing.

“Well, it’s a tough situation to accept,” he told the official F1 website, “but on the other hand it is not something that I can change, so it doesn’t help to get furious about it. My aim for the future is to avoid such situations and find a way that can guarantee me a cockpit and look for a team that is banking on talent.

“There are obviously some teams on the grid that seem to need drivers that come with money and that’s a bit sad, as the sport should be driven by talent.

“It is probably the current economic climate that has created such a situation because you also have to say that, without funding there is no racing, so there is the necessity to dig for gold. Of course it would be preferable in Formula 1 for the best drivers to compete against each other with sheer talent alone and not with their wallets.”
