Renault doctor: Impossible to pinpoint Kubica return

10 March 2011

Riccardo Ceccarelli, Renault doctor, has stated that it is currently ‘impossible’ to predict when recovering Robert Kubica may be able to return to the cockpit of a Formula 1 car. Following his rally crash in early February, the Pole continues to recover in an Italian hospital where doctors remain pleased with his rate of progress.

“Robert is getting better every day,” Ceccarelli - adding that another operation is not necessary at present - told a sizeable group of reporters, including GPUpdate.net, at the Circuit de Catalunya.

“I see that he is recovering, both psychologically and physically, very quickly; it’s not a surprise for us, because we know Robert very well, but it is a big surprise for the doctors at the hospital. We are quite happy about that strong reaction, which is obviously the first positive thing in a traumatic situation.

“He is still at the same hospital, which has many departments plus specialists and physiotherapists for the hand, providing the best assistance for hours every day. It would make no sense to move him from there because they know exactly what’s happening and have the right structure for him.”

When asked to express his feelings on a possible return for Kubica, Italian and former doctor for Toyota Ceccarelli replied: “No-one can answer when or how…we can only say that the surgeons did a great job, Robert is very strong and is recovering in a good way, but there is a third factor which is his nature. How will he be? Nice or not? Fast or not? Those things we cannot say.

“Last time (after Canada 2007) it was a month and a half. This time it will be longer. I know everybody would like to know when, how…but if I try to predict it would just be stupid.

"It will take a long time, that’s what we know, and we will see day by day how it’s going and only after another month we will understand – at the moment it’s impossible.

“Robert is moving fingers, he’s moving his wrist and that is good, that’s positive, but we cannot predict anything else. When he finally leaves the hospital he’ll begin rehabilitation and it will be rehabilitation, rehabilitation, rehabilitation. We just have to follow it day by day, understand what he needs and from that we will decide which kind of rehabilitation he needs and where.”
