Red Bull’s Adrian Newey admits that McLaren made a huge step forward at the Australian Grand Prix, but adds that his former team was only able to do so after ‘copying’ the exhaust system first created by himself.
Red Bull’s exhaust-blown diffuser concept dates back to pre-season testing of 2010, with the hot exit gases being directed towards the rear diffuser in order to generate extra levels of downforce.
“McLaren made a huge leap forward - by copying our exhaust, it has to be said,” Chief Designer Newey told Reuters. “But the bottom line is they still made huge leaps forward. I am sure they will be pushing us hard.
“We think it works for us. It seems it also works for McLaren. It's a form of flattery but it's a bit of a pain if they then beat you with it.”
