Ecclestone considers QPR sale of £100 million

27 April 2011

Bernie Ecclestone is deciding whether or not to sell his stake of the Queens Park Rangers football club for around 100 million pounds. The head of the Formula One Group, sporting commercial rights holders, purchased shares in the club with then Renault F1 Managing Director Flavio Briatore in 2007.

One pitfall for Ecclestone is that, after the pair bought into the project with steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, Briatore would now have first option on any sale.

“If somebody bought that team today it would be a very good punt,” Ecclestone, who purchased the majority shareholding of 62 percent from Briatore in December 2010, told The Guardian.

“It is probably worth 100 million. (But) I don't have any choice staying in or going out - Flavio would probably be the one to sell, if anybody…it is dependent on Flavio.”
