Warwick confirmed as steward for Istanbul

5 May 2011

Formula 1 governing body the FIA has confirmed that Derek Warwick will return to serve as a driver steward for this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix. The Jerseyman also took up the role in Spain and Hungary last year.

Warwick brings with him a vast amount of racing experience from various formulae, having clinched the 1992 World Sports Car Championship for Jaguar after starting his career in the 1960s, becoming South Karting Champion at the age of 16.

Second place overall then followed in Formula Ford on both the British and World stages before Derek won the Vandervell Formula 3 title and picked up the runner-up spot in the BP Championship. On top of this, Warwick also finished second overall in Formula 2.

He made his F1 debut with Toleman in 1981 before enjoying his highest-placed race finishes of second for Renault at the Belgian and British Grands Prix of 1984.

A sole win came as a driver in the British Touring Car Championship in 1998 although Derek later enjoyed much success as a Team Manager with Triple 8 and Vauxhall.
