Force India aiming to beat Mercedes

10 May 2011

Force India’s ultimate target this year is to beat the Mercedes works team. Those are the feelings of Team Manager Andy Stevenson, who is looking to move ahead of several rivals as a host of updates are introduced from Spain onwards.

In Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix, points eluded Mercedes-powered Force India as Adrian Sutil dropped from 12th on the grid to 13th while team-mate Paul di Resta stopped on-track with a suspected loose wheel after a pit-stop.

“We’ve had a design philosophy which we’ve been working on since the early part of the year,” Stevenson explained in the team’s post-race podcast.

“What it’s meant is that parts aren’t coming onto the car as quick as possible, or at least they weren’t. In the next few races you should see quite a few changes which, hopefully, should improve our performance and move us up the grid. We want to be solid Q3 qualifiers, so hopefully that’s what we’ll see.

“We’ve got the guys around us…Sauber, Williams, Toro Rosso – we want to be in front of all of those guys. We want to be in Q3 and to do that we’re going to have to beat them every time and possibly pick off some of the others."

However, Stevenson's ultimate goal is to run ahead of the factory silver arrow cars of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher:

“Mercedes are a very strong outfit and they seem to be moving forward, but they’re still not a million miles from where we are and that’s got to be our aim: to get in front of Mercedes.”
