Motor racing high up on Times Rich List

16 May 2011

Motor racing personalities are seven of the eleven richest people in Britain’s current sporting world, according to the recently published Sport Rich List by The Sunday Times. 2008 Champion Lewis Hamilton has moved up, with a predicted wealth of 50 million pounds, although former driver Johnny Dumfries remains ahead on £110m.

A Le Mans 24 Hour victor for Jaguar in 1988, Dumfries is fourth overall after inheriting the family estate from late father the 6th marquess on the Isle of Bute.

Behind, four-time Grand Prix winner turned property developer Eddie Irvine is placed sixth overall (£80m) from 1979 Champion Jody Scheckter, whose £60m has been generated through Firearms Training Systems and organic farming in England.

Placed eighth is Prodrive Chairman – and former Team Principal of Benetton and BAR - David Richards, with BBC television commentator David Coulthard now tied with Hamilton and 1992 title winner Nigel Mansell on an estimated £50m.

Topping this year’s list is football’s Dave Whelan, whose worth of 190 million edges out David Beckham’s 135 million.
