Mansell confirmed as steward for British GP

6 July 2011

F1’s governing body has confirmed that Nigel Mansell will serve as driver steward for the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The race – which the Englishman won four times – will mark his first appearance in the FIA office this season.

Mansell celebrated no less than a quartet of British Grand Prix victories with Williams, with the first being at Brands Hatch in 1986 before doing the double by spectacularly catching and passing team-mate Nélson Piquet at Silverstone one year later. To celebrate his successes of 1991 and title season 1992, crowds famously broke ranks and invaded the Northamptonshire track.

Mansell’s 1992 win was in fact his fifth in England, having broken his Formula 1 duck by winning the European Grand Prix at Kent’s Brands Hatch in 1985.
