Boullier coy over diffuser limitation effects

2011 British Formula 1 Grand Prix: Thursday

Eric Boullier is giving little away on the run-up to this weekend’s British Grand Prix which will see, for the first time this season, teams prevented from using advanced engine mapping for their blown diffusers. With Renault tipped as one team who could lose out most, its Team Principal is letting on-track results do the talking.

Starting at Silverstone, teams are no longer able to blown hot exhaust exit gases into the path of their diffuser while off the accelerator, in order to create extra downforce. Although the exact effects of this remain to be seen, most in the paddock anticipate Renault, Mercedes GP and championship leaders Red Bull to be worst hit.

“It’s a complicated issue and difficult to state their exact impact just yet,” says Frenchman Boullier. “What’s certain is that we need to anticipate the changes to the regulations in the best way we can. It will definitely affect every single team and it’s up to us and our engineers to cope better than our competitors with the changes.”
