Two minutes with Jack Harvey...

How did you get interested in racing?
My dad and my uncle have been involved in motorsport for as long as I can remember, so it was just something I thought I would naturally do, because of their interest and involvement in it. But that wasn’t really the case, I started playing football quite a lot. Then on my ninth birthday my dad bought me my first go-kart, but if I’m brutally honest it wasn’t something that I enjoyed straight away, I didn’t really click with it.
I knew I wasn’t very good as well, like anybody who’s starting. I didn’t enjoy it because I wasn’t very good at it, to start with. I think like anything you can see when you’re getting better in yourself, and then I started to make friends. It actually became an enjoyable place to be and then I got to the stage where I was then pushing him (my dad) to go racing by saying ‘let’s go out, let’s go out!’
To be honest, that part is essential, if we got to the stage where we are now and still didn’t want to go racing then we wouldn’t succeed. It’s a really crucial thing, and I’m not lucky because this is definitely what I want. At the start it was hard, but now I know 1000 percent this is what I want to do.
What's your greatest achievement so far?
Some aspects of the 2010 Formula BMW Europe season were some of my greatest achievements. In the first race at Monza (the final round) we led the championship and got knocked off, so the points deficit going into the final race made it nearly impossible to win the title, but we still went out and managed to win the race. I think that said a lot about me and the team, because it was just as hard for them as for me.
There were definitely some drives last year which I feel are my greatest achievements, although the actual end result of the championship didn’t show it. Last year was a really good year for me, but definitely bittersweet.
Do you have any racing heroes?
Yes and no. I think it’s always important to look at the people who race with you closely. So at the moment, I think Felipe Nasr is a good person to try and learn off. When I was karting I would look at the top karters and things like that. There are a lot of really good F1 drivers that I think everybody aspires to be like, but you can’t really have one hero.
You’ve got to cherry-pick a little bit of many drivers and try to create the perfect driver, everybody has areas where they could improve. You can’t afford to have one (as a hero), you’ve got to have several and cherry-pick different bits and attributes they have.
Who excites you most on the current F1 grid?
For pure racing you can’t think of anybody better than Lewis (Hamilton). To watch someone (like him) drive a lap is just awesome. I think Alonso is doing a fantastic job at Ferrari again, but it’s difficult to pinpoint one person.
And finally…tell us something crazy about yourself please…
I’ve got an A-level in Philosophy!
