Nick Heidfeld has explained that Renault’s new exhaust system is yet to be optimised ahead of this weekend’s German Grand Prix, with the squad trialling a more conventional rearward-facing design. The 34-year-old ended the second session of the day in eighth place, enjoying a considerable improvement over his form in the morning.

"It’s not working perfectly," the German explained. "It’s quite a big change for us coming from a forward exhaust to something other teams have been running for a while. We see there is potential but it’s not working perfectly so there is a lot of work to do."

Team Principal Eric Boullier says he is still unsure as to whether or not the system will be raced, but insists there are positive aspects to consider.

"I don’t know yet, to be honest" he said. "The discussion we had before the long debrief this afternoon was rather positive than negative to keep it. But I don’t know the latest."
