Simon joins PURE as Technical Director

28 July 2011

Gilles Simon, Technical and Powertrain Director at the FIA and formerly with Ferrari, has been recruited by the PURE Corporation as Technical Director. The Switzerland-based company is one of five possible F1 engine suppliers for the 2014 season.

After graduating from university in 1984, Simon held a Research and Development position with Renault before developing a V10 engine for Peugeot. He was Engine Project Manager at Ferrari between 1994 and 1997 and was then responsible for Engine Development between 1997 and 2006. From 2006 to 2009, he took on the role of leading the Scuderia’s Engine and Electronics Department.

“This appointment marks another key milestone in the development of PURE,” says Craig Pollock, the company’s Chief Executive.

“With Gilles Simon on-board, we have an exceptional and proven powertrain designer who has been instrumental in driving an environmentally friendly agenda into F1.”

“Making F1 more environmentally friendly is a personal goal of mine,” Simon adds. “The 2014 powertrain regulations mark the biggest change in this area of F1 for a generation. This opportunity to develop the PURE powertrain is a fantastic challenge and allows me to go to back to my passion - designing engines.”

Jean Todt, President of F1 governing body the FIA – of which Simon has been a part of for the past 18 months – adds:

“Gilles leaves the FIA with my thanks and best wishes. We have worked together on a variety of projects over many years at Peugeot, Ferrari and at the FIA and I know how much of his life has been devoted to his love of designing powertrains.”
