McLaren couldn’t hear Hamilton over radio

2011 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Lewis Hamilton has explained how he was affected by radio communication problems in the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 2008 World Champion, who led for much of the race but was plagued by a spin and tactical error, eventually held off Red Bull’s Mark Webber for fourth place.

“We were having radio issues,” Hamilton explained. “I could hear my engineers but they couldn't hear me, so I was constantly asking for information but of course they couldn't hear me. I heard them saying it was going to rain and it was already spitting, so we went for the (Intermediate) tyres – they went off, so it wasn't necessarily the best call, but that's racing.”

On Lap 47, Hamilton made the costly error of spinning at the Turn 6-7 chicane before spin-turning his car to rejoin, but into the path of Paul di Resta’s Force India.

“I made a big mistake,” the McLaren driver continued. “I went a bit wide at the chicane and spun - which is very, very rare. I have to apologise to Paul di Resta, I didn't see him - I had absolutely no clue (that he was there). I don't really know what happened but I got a penalty for something which is to be expected sometimes, I guess. So I apologise to him.”
