Bernie Ecclestone, head of F1 commercial rights holders Formula One Management (FOM), has criticised the new electric pit motor idea of 2014. In the recently published Technical Regulations it was confirmed by governing body the FIA that, while in the pit lane, no car will be able to run on its standard petrol engine.
“Formula 1 is absolutely not the right place to have electric engines,” Ecclestone told The Express. “It’s like having ballet dancers with sneakers - more comfortable, but it doesn’t work. There’s no way that it will be electric in the pit lane. People could be killed because they won’t hear the cars coming.”
Ecclestone went on to claim that the idea is of long-term friend and former FIA President Max Mosley, as opposed to current leader of the federation Jean Todt:
“We can’t blame Jean Todt because this was started by Max. It was Max’s original idea. His idea is what is being promoted now.”
