Mexican GP return 'being studied'

9 August 2011

Formula 1 could return to Mexico in the not too distant future according to Carlos Slim Domit, an FIA member and sponsor of the country’s Automobile Association. The wealthy businessman, son of the world’s richest man Carlos Slim, says the historic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is one of the possible options.

The nation last hosted a Grand Prix back in 1992, with Britain’s Nigel Mansell triumphing at the aforementioned circuit. However, after a hiatus of almost two decades, Slim Domit told Reuters that the possibility of a homecoming is ‘being studied’.

FIA President Jean Tody recently pondered the opportunity, stating that he expects to visit the 17-turn, 4.438-km (2.774-mi) venue to discuss potential plans.

"As part of the meetings I am doing, I intend to see the Hermanos Rodríguez circuit," Todt told Europa Press. "Today Mexico is an economically strong country and I am convinced that in the future (a return) is possible.

"However, we know that the races have a cost, and there are also a number of criteria for the approval of an event, especially in terms of safety."

Sole Mexican representative Sergio Pérez said earlier in the year: "Of course it would be very nice to do a race in Mexico, this is my dream. Since I left I have never done a race in Mexico. It would be very special for me to race in Mexico."
