Otmar Szafnauer, Force India’s Chief Operating Officer, says having three drivers is ‘a luxury problem’, explaining that the extra competition is beneficial for the team. Reserve driver Nico Hülkenberg has been tipped to land a full-time seat at the Silverstone squad, but Adrian Sutil and rookie Paul di Resta have both demonstrated strong pace in 2011.
"That's a luxury problem," Szafnauer explained to Auto Motor und Sport. "Shall we toss a coin? At the end of the year we will analyse the three drivers and then make our decision."
The Romanian went on to talk about Hülkenberg's Friday practice outings, admitting that if the team had to fight with a rival at the end of the season, they could give their permanent drivers the maximum amount of track time available.
"(Having three drivers) can be a disadvantage under certain circumstances. If it was at the end of the season and we were fighting with Renault for fifth place and we felt that this was a disadvantage, then we would have to come up with something."
Szafnauer added that Hülkenberg has positively influenced both Sutil and di Resta this season: "If one of the three was clearly slower, the pressure would have a negative effect. This is how the internal competition makes all three even better."
