Todt confident over São Paulo safety

17 August 2011

FIA President Jean Todt says ‘detailed inquiries’ have been made into recent accidents at the São Paulo circuit, with the ex-Ferrari boss eager to ease any safety concerns. His comments come after the death of Brazilian stock car driver Gustavo Sondermann in April, a tragedy which followed previous fatalities Rafael Sperafico and Paul Kunze.

The corner raising debate ahead of this year's event is Turn 14, the high-speed left hander which leads directly onto the undulating pit-straight. Formula 1 drivers Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg have all endured serious accidents there in the past, but Todt insists the necessary steps will be taken to ensure a safe race weekend for all involved.

"We are aware of the incidents that occurred at Interlagos in another category," Todt explained to Brazil's Agencia Estado. "We made detailed inquiries about the cars (involved in crashes), not the track. But everyone can rest assured that all measures will be taken to avoid repetition of such accidents."
