Although neither he nor Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner admit that either of the 2011 titles are already all but won, Sebastian Vettel admits that his position is a ‘promising’ one with seven of the 19 Grands Prix remaining.
After picking up win number seven of 12 at Spa on Sunday, Vettel carries a 92-point lead over team-mate Mark Webber, with a maximum of 175 still on offer. Mathematically, the German – who has already scored more points than in the entire 2010 season – can seal his second title by as early as next month’s race in Singapore.
“There is a saying in English that you have to bake the cake before you cut it!” Vettel is quoted as saying by the official F1 website.
“There are still 175 points waiting to be scored, so it’s better to stay cool. Cockiness never does any good. What was good about the weekend was that we left Spa with the maximum points possible - and that is promising.”
Vettel’s 17th career victory leaves him 14th in the overall statistics, one ahead of Britain’s Stirling Moss and current rival Lewis Hamilton. Another win would equal the sum of 2007 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen.
