This data, based on the pit-straight speed trap, all but confirms Vettel's decision to move towards a shorter gearing configuration after Friday practice. The German therefore has a lot of work to do throughout the corners, having to make up for the time he loses on the straights and ensure that he is out of danger when approaching the two DRS zones.

However, Vettel's rivals will have to contend with slightly less aerodynamic grip and longer gear ratios if they are to beat him, relying more on straight line speed to challenge for victory. The whole race will be based around the reigning Champion's potential ability to consistently counteract his lower speed trap rating and shorter gearing method, as he did so well in qualifying en route to pole number ten of 2011.

On a whole, the two teams to look out for in terms of mass overtaking will be Sauber and Renault. The slipstreaming approach utilised by Ferrari somewhat covers up their true speed, but Pérez, Senna and Petrov all look extremely rapid at full throttle.
