Liuzzi handed five-place grid drop for Singapore

2011 Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Vitantonio Liuzzi has been handed a five-place grid penalty for the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix after causing the accident which affected several cars at Monza’s first corner.

As the pack headed towards on the Rettifilo Chicane, the HRT driver – in his home race – lost control entering the braking zone, sliding across the grass before rejoining the circuit and slamming into the side of Vitaly Petrov’s Renault. The consequent knock-on effect also removed Nico Rosberg from the race while several other drivers took evasive action.

As Liuzzi – who explained his version of events to stewards including former driver Derek Daly – is expected to qualify no better than 23rd in Marina Bay, it is now possible that the 30-year-old will skip the grid-deciding session all together in a bid to save tyres for the race.
