Williams have revealed that the spin which damaged the car of Pastor Maldonado during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix was not related to his DRS.
Initially, it was believed the Venezuelan rookie of 2011 had activated his adjustable rear wing flap too soon, resulting in a spin towards the inside barriers. However the team has now discovered otherwise, with Maldonado having rejoined the session and managing 14th on the grid before finishing Sunday’s race 11th.
“He was obviously pushing and on quite a good lap, which I was happy about because it meant having the delay with the KERS issue didn’t seem to faze him,” says Williams Technical Director Sam Michael.
“However, on the exit of the Parabolica the rear wheels spun too quickly for him to react. Initially we thought it was due to him pressing the DRS too early, but it actually happened after that.”
