Williams ‘delighted’ by Michael’s new role

13 September 2011

Sir Frank Williams has expressed delight over Sam Michael’s move to McLaren, with the Australian leaving Williams and joining the Woking squad as Sporting Director from the start of 2012. Michael has been part of the Grove-based team for ten years.

Having joined Williams as Chief Operations Engineer in 2001, Michael took over from Patrick Head as Technical Director for 2004. His Williams exit was announced earlier this year and he will officially leave the team after the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix. Replacing him will be former McLaren member Mike Coughlan, whose team will consist of Jason Somerville and Mark Gillan, who arrives next Monday.

“I am delighted that Sam has found a new role that will enable him to continue to apply his energy, passion and experience to Formula 1,” says Williams. “On behalf of everyone at Williams I wish him a successful move to his new team.

“I would also like to thank Sam for his help in enabling a swift and smooth transition to our new technical leadership. Mike Coughlan and Jason Somerville are settling in very well and the restructuring will be complete when Mark Gillan joins us as Chief Operations Engineer on 19 September.”
