Alguersuari ‘bothered’ by Webber’s re-signing

14 September 2011

Jaime Alguersuari has admitted that he is ‘bothered’ by the fact that Red Bull Racing have renewed Mark Webber’s contract ahead of the 2012 Formula 1 season. Prior to the confirmation, it was believed that either the Spaniard or Toro Rosso team-mate Sébastien Buemi could step up to drive alongside Sebastian Vettel next year.

With Red Bull Junior Daniel Ricciardo currently honing his skills with HRT before a likely switch to Toro Rosso next season, it appears almost certain that either Alguersuari or Buemi will have to yield their seat to the Australian.

“No, nothing has been confirmed,” Alguersuari told Spanish radio station Cadena SER when asked if a Toro Rosso deal is in place for 2012. “I am pleased that we have a Spanish sponsor at the team, but I haven’t spoken with anybody.”

When asked if Webber’s new one-year contract came as a nuisance, Alguersuari frankly replied:

“Absolutely, absolutely. I want to be in a team which can win races. I think that, I believe that and I stand by that - and not just me, but my team-mate - if you give us a Red Bull, we’ll be at the front and winning races. Give us a bad car and we’ll be further back but, even so, sometimes you can still progress through the field.

“But give us a Red Bull and we’re in front, we’re in front to win races. It’s the truth. If you’ve got the car, you’re at the front, and if you’ve not got the car you’re at the back. I’m good with Toro Rosso, I’m delighted that they took me on from a young age to be able to reach Formula 1 when I was 19 and all of that, but I want to continue improving. It’s great to be with Toro Rosso but I think, one day, I’ve got to be in a better team, to be honest, to keep improving and winning races. That’s all.”

The Barcelona driver also stressed that he cannot afford to be slower than his team-mate:

“I’m only saying this because, for sure, if I was continuously half a second slower than my team-mate, I wouldn’t be here – I’d be out. That’s how it is.

"There are drivers who, every weekend, are half a second slower than their team-mate and they’re always behind, but the team is saying they’re doing a good job. I don’t understand that, because if I did that I would be out – and that is that.”
