Brawn: No repeats of 2009 for Mercedes

17 September 2011

Ross Brawn is confident that Mercedes GP will be able to enjoy a significant leap forward in performance for the 2012 season. The silver arrows made their return to Formula 1 as a works team last year, although the Brackley-based outfit has so far racked up only three podium finishes with Nico Rosberg in 2010.

After falling from Champions in 2009 (as Brawn GP) to a solid but distant fourth last season, Mercedes stole fourth from Renault in this year’s Constructors’ Championship after the British Grand Prix and continue to battle with the Enstone squad. For 2012, Brawn hopes for a significant step in a positive direction.

“There was a major change in regulations in 2009 and that will not be the case from 2011 to 2012,” the Team Principal is quoted as saying by the official F1 website, doubting any repeats of a 2009-like improvement. “It will be a sort of evolution, so I don’t think the situation is the same as then.

“The 2012 cars will be a much more gentle evolution; cars will increase over the winter in the normal percentages, unless somebody comes up with a very radical idea nobody else has thought about yet.

“We will put the same resource, effort and amount of work into the new car as the other top teams. I don’t feel in any way disadvantaged in terms of the resources, capacity and effort we are putting into the new car. My guess is that we are making a good step forward.”
