Karthikeyan aims to beat Lotus/Virgin in India

4 October 2011

Narain Karthikeyan has stated that he is aiming to beat the Team Lotus and Virgin Racing cars on his race return to Formula 1 at the Indian Grand Prix. Having been replaced at HRT by Daniel Ricciardo, the 34-year-old will make a comeback for what is his country’s inaugural event on the final weekend of October.

“To say that we will score our first points in Greater Noida will not be a realistic statement,” Karthikeyan, who will again replace Vitantonio Liuzzi for first practice in Japan, admitted to The Times of India.

“As you know, the cars have improved a lot since the first race in Malaysia (with HRT having failed to qualify in Australia); updates were made even last weekend in Singapore. But I would say a realistic goal for us for the Indian Grand Prix would be to finish ahead of the three new teams and maybe a little higher.

“The main aim will be to take the car home and then push for a stronger finish and I believe, with the home support, we can do that easily and maybe more.”

With Lotus reserve driver Karun Chandhok also hoping to race in India, it is so far unknown as to whether or not Karthikeyan will be the only national in the race.
